tout

Syllable Decomposition

tout

(indefinite adjective) from popular Latin of Gaul and Italy tottus (emphatic or expressive reduplication), alteration of classical Latin totus ('all, every, whole'), maintained in Iberia: in French 'tout' and Italian 'tutto', as opposed to Spanish 'todo' and Portuguese 'tudo'. Alongside the forms, the masculine plural subject case of Old French was 'tuit'. The transition from 'totti' (masculine plural nominative) to 'tuit' still awaits a definitive explanation: it is almost certain that 'o' closed to 'u' due to the final 'i' dilation effect, but it is the diphthong of coalescence 'ui' that is difficult to explain.
