tout

Syllable Decomposition

tout

(indefinite adjective) from Vulgar Latin of Gaul and Italy tottus (emphatic or expressive reduplication), alteration of Classical Latin totus ('whole, entire'), maintained in Iberia: opposed to French tout and Italian tutto are Spanish todo and Portuguese tudo. Alongside the forms, the masculine plural nominative case of Old French was tuit. The transition from totti (masculine plural nominative) to tuit still awaits a definitive explanation: it is almost certain that o closed to u under the effect of dilation of the final i, but it is the diphthong of coalescence ui that is hard to explain.
