tout

Syllable Decomposition

tout

(indefinite adjective) from popular Latin of Gaul and Italy tottus (emphatic or expressive reduplication), alteration of classical Latin totus ('whole, each, entire'), maintained in Iberia: the French tout and the Italian tutto, are opposed to the Spanish todo and the Portuguese tudo. Alongside the forms, the masculine plural subject case of Old French was tuit. The transition from totti (masculine plural nominative) to tuit still awaits a definitive explanation: it is almost certain that o has closed in u by the effect of dilation of the final i, but it is the diphthong of coalescence ui that is difficult to explain.
