noce

common nounverb

Syllable Decomposition

noce

from the vulgar Latin noptiae, a corrupted form of the classical nuptiae ('marriage, wedding, carnal commerce, coupling'), itself derived from nupta, the feminine past participle of nubere, 'to veil', the Roman tradition being that the woman take the veil to get married. See also nubile and nuptial which are derived from it. nubes, 'cloud' in Latin, is another representative of this Indo-European root and has given nubilare and obnubilare, 'to cover with a cloud', hence the French obnubiler. As for the transition from nuptiae to noptiae, it is due to the influence of novius, 'newly married' in vulgar Latin (from novus, 'new').
