Syllable Decomposition
guidefrom the Old French guis in the nominative, guion in the case, and guion, guions, in the plural; derived from the Vulgar Latin guido, guidonis of the Frankish witan ('to show the way') from the Indo-European root *weid- ('to know', see video in Latin). Alongside, there was a feminine verbal noun, guida, guia, guide ('the action of guiding') which has survived until the 17th century; for a long time it was incorrectly taken to be the feminine of the masculine guide. The old language also used guierre, but this was a verbal noun in the nominative, representing a non-Latin form; guidator.
