Syllable Decomposition

guide

from Old French guis in the nominative, guion in the oblique, and guion, guions in the plural; derived from Late Latin guido, guidonis from Frankish witan ('to show the way') from the Indo-European root *weid- ('to know' see video in Latin). Alongside, there was a feminine verbal noun, guida, guia, guide ('the action of guiding') which was preserved until the 17th century; it was mistakenly taken for a long time as the feminine of the masculine guide. The old language also said guierre, but it was a nominative verbal noun, representing a non-Latin form; guidator.
