cotte
common nounverb
Syllable Decomposition
cottefrom the late Latin cotta, cottus attested in a text from the 9th century and derived from the Frankish kotta, from the Germanic kozzo ('woolen coat'). Diez derives it from cutis, ('skin'); but there are two difficulties: the declension and especially the masculine declension, assuming cuta and cutus; then the meaning; whereas the Celtic and German converge to give an etymology: Gaelic cot and cota, cotha, quota in Italian cotta.
