cotte
common nounverb
Syllable Decomposition
cottefrom the Late Latin cotta, cottus attested in a 9th-century text and derived from the Frankish kotta, from the Germanic kozzo ('woolen coat'). Diez derives it from cutis ('skin'); but there are two difficulties: the declension and especially the masculine declension, assuming cuta and cutus; then the meaning; whereas the Celtic and German converge to provide an etymology: Gaelic cot and cota, cotha, quota in Italian cotta.
