apheresis of stribord (1678), itself an apheresis of an older estribord (1573), destrebort (1484), borrowed from classical Dutch stierboord (1588), hence the modern form stuurboord, composed of stuur, "rudder", and boord, "side", literally: "side of the rudder", the rudder being formerly fixed to starboard.
