tellure

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

tellure

From the Latin tellus (goddess of the Earth). Its name was proposed by Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who isolated this element in 1798. As this element was discovered at the same time as selenium - whose name is derived from the Greek name for the moon - and as these two elements are always found together, it was decided to name it after the name of the Earth to recall the fact that the Earth and the Moon are inseparable.
