adapted from table, painting of the old Occitan retaule, itself haplology of reiretaule (attested in 1218), and composed of the Latin retro ('behind') and tabula ('plank, table', 'altar' in medieval Latin) attested in the Latin form retrotabula in 1259, retrotabulum in 1294.
