Syllable Decomposition

mellite

Word created by Johann Friedrich Gmelin from Ancient Greek μέλι (méli, "honey") and λίθος (líthos, "stone"), so named because it has the color of honey. Littré attempted to promote the variant mellithe, mellithique over mellite, mellitique to clearly differentiate this word from the following, but without success. See mélitite attested in 1762 and the more recent mélilite.
