word created by Johann Friedrich Gmelin from Ancient Greek , see μέλι, λίθος, tr1=méli, tr2=líthos, sens1=honey and sens2=stone, so named because it has the color of honey. Littré attempted to promote the variant mellithe, mellithique over mellite, mellitique to clearly differentiate this word from the following, but without success. See mélitite attested in 1762 and the more recent mélilite.
