from Old French warance, from Medieval Latin warentia 'scarlet dye' (7th century), alteration of Frankish wratja (see Old English wrætte, Old High German rezza), borrowed from Latin bractea, brattea 'sheet metal, gold leaf', crossed with blatta, blattea 'purple' which gives Old French blacce.
