fille

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

fille

from the Latin filia, the feminine of filius 'son'. The word, which was pronounced /ˈfi.li.a/, had a yod develop between the l and the final a in the 1st century, modifying the pronunciation to /ˈfi.lja/. Then this yod combined with the l to give a palatal l and the word was pronounced /ˈfi.ʎa/ until the end of the 19th century. In his dictionary, Émile Littré made many warnings to maintain this phoneme, which proves that it was disappearing and evolving into a yod.
