courriel

A contraction (portmanteau word) of the words 'courrier' (mail) and 'électronique' (electronic), allowing the appearance of the suffix '-iel', which creates a sound similar to that of other computer terms (logiciel, ludiciel, plugiciel, etc.). This term was not created by the Office québécois de la langue française, but it was promoted by them in the 1990s (1997?).
