canaque

Syllable Decomposition

canaque

would come from the Hawaiian ʻkanakaʻ (ʻhuman beingʻ). It was generalized, at the initiative of European navigators and merchants, to the entire Pacific, to designate the Melanesian indigenous populations, the Marquesans or the Easter Islanders. The term gradually took on a more or less pejorative meaning and was restricted to the indigenous populations of New Caledonia.
