canaque

Syllable Decomposition

canaque

It would come from the Hawaiian ("human being"). It becomes generalized, at the initiative of European navigators and merchants, to the entire Pacific, to designate the Melanesian indigenous populations, the Marquesans or the Easter Islanders. The term gradually takes on a more or less pejorative meaning and is limited to the indigenous populations of New Caledonia.
