Nouveaux-Pays-Bas

proper noun

Syllable Decomposition

Nouveaux-Pays-Bas

The first appearance of the Dutch term Nieuw Nederland is found on a map drawn in 1614 based on the exploration voyages led by the Dutchman Adriaen Block on behalf of the Admiralty of Amsterdam. Francophone cartographers of the 17th century, such as Louis Hennepin, used the term Nouveaux Pays-Bas to refer to the Dutch colony in North America, while the term New Holland seems to have been preferred in Jesuit relations. Today, the term New Netherland seems to have been more commonly adopted by Francophone historians.
