from Old French vouste (tower, turn, turn, vaulted hall) which gives voûte with the circumflex accent, or volte which gives voute; further, derived from Vulgar Latin volvita ("roll") from Latin volvo (to roll, to roll). The spelling voûte appears in the 17th century.
