vingt

common nounadjective

Syllable Decomposition

vingt

from Late Latin vinti dif=vīnti (dif=vīnti) (attested) or vinti (depending on the region), in Classical Latin viginti. The preservation of the short ĭ in the stressed syllable in French is due to a dilation effect. The word was spelled vint in the Middle Ages. The spelling vingt, generalized during the Renaissance, is therefore a false regression.
