from the German uranismus, a term coined by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (1825-1895), in a work published in 1864 under the pseudonym Numa Numantius, Researches on the Riddle of Love Between Men. The term is derived from Ourania ('Urania' in French), an epithet of the goddess Aphrodite. Ulrichs named urninge ('Uranians' or 'Uranists' in French) the men who love men, dioninge the people who love the opposite sex, and urninden the women who love women.
