trivial
adjective
Syllable Decomposition
trivialborrowed by François Rabelais from Latin trivialis, from trivium ('crossroads of three paths'). Furetière mentions the adjective triviaire ('where three roads meet'). It designated until the 19th century something common, banal, without a pejorative connotation, then took on its modern meaning of ('coarse'), which in fact already existed in Latin.
