totalitaire
adjective
Syllable Decomposition
totalitairefrom the French 'totalité' with the suffix '-aire'. First half of the 20th century. History has given this adjective a strong political connotation evoking Fascist, Nazi or Soviet regimes: the Mussolinian 'stato totalitario' is taken up again in 1932 by the German jurist Carl Schmitt before the 'Union with the Long Name', an assembly of German industrialists, who, convinced that the 'total state' (der totale staat) opens the best prospects for them, will convince Hindenburg to entrust power to Hitler.
