Its pre-Latin origin is strongly suspected but not proposed (Gaulish, ancient Ligurian...). It is corroborated by the attestation in Sicilian tôma and Calabrian. An alternative by a Latin etymon tuma associated by meaning with tumere ('to swell') is proposed.
