tadorne
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
tadorneof uncertain origin. Littré indicates that there is a form tardone, the metathesis of /r/ is evident. In the origin of the names of birds and mammals of Europe, it is given as derived from an acoustic radical tard, just like Turdidae and outarde, specifying for the latter that the classical etymology of avis tarda ("slow bird") is unjustified for those who know its rapid flight. It should be mentioned that Turdidae derives from the Latin turdus ("thrush" see tourd) itself close to turtur ("dove").
