sécurité
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
sécuritéborrowed from the Latin securitas (exemption from worries; peace of mind). sécurité (from the 12th century but rare before the 17th century) is considered a scholarly doublet of sûreté (in Old French and Middle French seürté), the latter term being attested since 1498 (Le Robert). Féraud notes that 'sécurité and sûreté are not the same thing; the former expresses a feeling and the latter a state of assurance; one often has security without being in safety'.
