syncrétisme

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

syncrétisme

borrowed from ancient Greek συγκρητισμός sugkrêtismós, "union of two Cretans", as the Cretans were reputed to be liars and deceivers. Cf. krêtizein, "to speak like a Cretan, to be an impostor", or the famous Liar's Paradox: "Epimenides, a Cretan thinker, claimed that all Cretans are liars". The meaning has evolved towards "agreement between opposing parties against a common enemy".
