spleen
common noun
from English spleen (spleen), derived from Latin splen, also designating this organ, itself derived from ancient Greek σπλήν splēn (splēn). The meaning in French, 'melancholy', comes from the fact that ancient medicine associated this disease with black bile, supposedly secreted by the spleen. The melancolia splenica was known in the 16th century, which, associated with the English adjective, was among others popularized by Charles Baudelaire through his poems on spleen.
