from the classical Latin adverb subtus ('below, underneath'), which became, in Late Latin, a preposition that competes with sub, which only survives in Romanian sub, Spanish and Old Portuguese so; subtus gave rise to Romanian supt, Italian sotto, and Old Spanish soto.
