From Vulgar Latin subtel (hollow under the sole of the foot), derived from subtalaris ('under the heel'), see sub- and talaris, and reworked in Vulgar Latin as subtelaris (attested in the 7th century in Isidore of Seville). The word originally referred to a shoe that did not cover the top of the foot, a sandal, and replaced solea ('sandal').
