Borrowed from Norwegian ski. The French word ski(e) appears as early as 1841, through a defective reading, as evidenced by its specific pronunciation, possibly through English or German, of the Norwegian word ski, pronounced /ʃi/. The German expression schie fahren indicates that skiing is akin to a vehicle that allows one to glide, in the same way that a bicycle allows one to roll, which the French language denies by accepting the term 'marche à ski' (walking on skis).
