from Old Low Franconian salu 'pale, dull' (cf. Dutch zaluw), by association with Italian salavo of identical meaning; related to regional German sal 'dark', to English sallow 'waxy'. A crossing with Gaulish is also plausible by comparing this word with Irish and Scottish sal 'dirt', salach 'dirty' and Welsh halog 'dirty'.
