probably a variant of riper ('to scratch') see ripopée and ripaille for the sense of 'good cheer' and rupin ('rich, abundant, luxurious') for another related word whose root has undergone the same vocalic alternation. or from Old French reuper: 'to belch' (cf. cotgrave).
