route

common noun

Syllable Decomposition

route

From Vulgar Latin rupta, from the Latin verb rumpere ("to break"). The French expression "marcher dans les brisées de quelqu'un" ("to walk in someone's footsteps") and "être rompu aux affaires" ("to be experienced in business") are related to this etymology. "Déroute" ("rout") comes from the old French meaning of "route" as "defeat", also in line with the Latin sense of rupture.
