a term invented by Jean-François Bizot in Actuel (magazine) and in his film La Route (released in 1972). Philippe Gloaguen (Le Guide du Routard) registered the word 'routard' with the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) in 1975. from route with the suffix -ard.
