Phonetic distortion of the word rambière, a term from the maritime jargon formerly (probably from the 18th century) designating the figurehead (mermaid, goddess, etc.) of large sailing ships of the time (not to be confused with the very similar word rombalière), hence the first uses of the word in mockery ... old rambière!
