robot(1924) From Czech robot, derived from robota ('work, labor, drudgery'). The word was introduced in 1920 by the Czech writer Karel Čapek in the play Rossum's Universal Robots, first performed in 1921. Although Karel Čapek is often considered the inventor of the word, he himself credited his brother Josef, a painter and writer, as the actual inventor.
