prométhéumfrom Prometheus (the Titan), with the suffix -um. The name of this Titan was chosen because he stole fire from the gods in Greek mythology. This is because promethium was first identified in the residues of a nuclear reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Prométhéum is the French adaptation of the name first proposed (in 1948) by the discoverers (Prometheum); promethium was the name adopted by IUPAC in 1949 (to regularize the ending in -ium), and the form prométhium has since strongly competed with it.
