in Old French, the feminine of the past participle of the verb poursuivre. attested from 1247 with the meaning of legal action brought against someone (sense 1). it is found with the sense 2 (action of carrying out) from 1259. the sense of following someone appears later in this spelling, in the 14th century. but it seems that this is in fact the oldest sense, attested in 1158 in du cange, with the Latin word prosecuta.
