potassium
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
potassiumfrom English potassium, a word created by the English chemist Humphrey Davy from the English potash, potass ('potash') accompanied by the suffix -ium (to designate a metal). Potash comes from the German pottasche ('potash', literally 'ashes in a pot'), formed from the words pott ('pot') and asche ('ash'), because potash (potassium carbonate) was obtained after processing plant ashes: they were first soaked in water and then, after filtration and evaporation in pots, it was obtained as a solid residue.
