pompile

from Latin pompilus ('species of sea fish, naucrates ductor l., pilot fish') borrowed from Greek πομπιλος of the same meaning, literally ('guide, conductor') because it accompanies sharks, rays, and turtles, feeding on the remains of their meals, derived from Greek πεμπω ('escort, accompany'). The insect is probably named due to the similarity of the stripes of some species (such as the great pompile, cryptocheilus comparatus) with those of the pilot fish.
