plumitif

common nounadjective

Syllable Decomposition

plumitif

According to Ménage, approved by Scheler, it is a corruption of 'primitif'; he assures that in the chapter of the Church of Paris one still says 'primitif'; and, in fact, the low Latin has 'primitivum', 'original written'. But, on the other hand, it is certain that 'plumetis' was also said for a writing, and that the corruption into 'plumitif' is easy. 'Plumetis' comes from 'plumeter', 'to write with a pen', 'plumeteur', 'writer', which were also said, and come from 'plume'.
