piétiste

A word used by Pierre Bayle to translate the German term 'pietist' referring to the members of the religious movement founded by Spener. From the Latin 'pietas' ('piety', 'the sentiment that makes one recognize and fulfill all duties towards the gods, parents, the homeland, etc.'). The doctrine of the Pietists was then naturally called Pietism.
