The term "photovoltaic" is composed of the ancient Greek word "photos" (φωτoς : light, clarity), the surname of the Italian physicist (Alessandro Volta), and the suffix -ic generally used to form an adjective from a noun and meaning "related to this thing, characteristic of this thing".
