from Latin ecclesiastical paradisus, derived from Ancient Greek parádeisos ('animal enclosure'), the term was used in the translation of the Bible into Greek to designate Eden. The word itself came from Avestan *pairiḍaēza ('garden, enclosure, enclosed space') composed of pairi ('around') and daēza ('wall') and was transmitted to Greece through Persian pardêz.
