from Latin neptis, 'granddaughter' then 'niece', in Vulgar Latin, becoming nĕptia (corpus inscriptionum latinarum). Alongside nĕptia, the Vulgar Latin of southern Gaul and Iberia also had the competing form nĕpta (cf. Old Occitan neta/nepta, Spanish nieta ('granddaughter'), Catalan and Portuguese neta).
