meurtrir

verb

The etymological meaning of meurtrir was 'to cause death, kill, assassinate' which has remained in its verbal noun meurtre. In the Renaissance, it underwent a weakening of its meaning, the proper meaning being taken up by assassiner or mortifier, which from 'causing death' has undergone the same evolution of meaning towards 'to injure, to morally injure, to humiliate'. Attested in Old French as mordrir, meurdrir, murtrir, it is derived from the Old Low Franconian fro murth(r)jan ('to kill') related to ermorden, mord in German, murder in English.
