from Latin mercatus (commerce, trade, market), past participle of the verb mercor ('to buy, to trade'), derived from merx ('merchandise'), formerly merces ('reward, pay, salary, income'). Gave rise to Provençal mercat, Italian mercato, Spanish and Portuguese marcado.
