meige

from Old French mege, from Latin medicus ('doctor'). It comes from the transcription of the medieval term mèdze referring to healers or bonesetters. This term is found in maige in Savoy, mégy in Haute-Provence, mège or metge in the Midi, mire and lemire in northern France, as well as miret, mirey, and mirot. Sometimes the term meidzo is also heard.
